Part two of my adventure in Japan, before having to rush home as the world was grinding to a halt (as tempting as it seemed to try and ride out the pandemic in Japan!).
I specifically planned this trip around sakura, the cherry blossom season, which lasts for just two weeks a year. Pink cherry trees bloom and blanket the country, from North to South. A spectacle which attracts millions of locals and tourists every year.
Although this year, I was told that tourism was down 95%, so fellow travellers and I felt very lucky to be in Japan in what was a once in a lifetime experience, without the usual hordes of eternal selfie takers at every corner.
As I’m sure you remember, things escalated very quickly in the second half of March, and I found myself on my phone, booking flights home for the next evening.
It just so happened that the day of my flight was the first day of sakura, so I met an old friend and got to experience how the Japanese celebrate sakura in one of the most popular parks in Tokyo. And with all my bags in hand, had to then go straight to the airport and get home in perfect time for lockdown.
Japan, I will be back!
