Drive Profile Guide for the Series 5 Powerchair

Your Series 5 powerchair comes with four pre-programmed drive modes: Indoor, Outdoor, Outdoor Fast, and Extreme. As the names suggest, each mode is tailored for a different environment, optimising the chair’s performance to match where you’re driving.

When you first receive your Series 5, we recommend starting with Indoor mode – even when you’re outside – until you feel comfortable with how the chair handles. The Series 5 is not like other powerchairs; it’s exceptionally powerful and responsive, and may take a bit of getting used to.

Each drive mode is calibrated for typical environments, but we know every user is different. That’s why you can adjust each mode to suit your personal needs and preferences.

Customising your drive settings

To customise your drive settings:

From here, you can fine-tune various drive parameters so your Series 5 works exactly how you need it to. Depending on your disability some of the drive parameters are more relevant than others.

For example, those with limited strength in their upper bodies will require a brake that kicks in later and softer, to give the body enough time to react. To do this you can reduce the deceleration value.

If you experience involuntary movements or have reduced hand mobility (such as some users with cerebral palsy), you might find the Series 5’s immediate responsiveness challenging at first. In this case, reducing turn acceleration and turn speed values, while increasing turn deceleration, can greatly improve control and stability.

If you’re unsure where to begin, speak with your trained Distributor or Sales Manager to help tailor the settings to your needs.

Different terrains

The Series 5 is built for both indoor and outdoor use. You may need to adjust your driving style or drive settings depending on the terrain.

Experienced users often use the same settings across various surfaces, but if you’re still getting used to your chair, here are some tips for tackling tricky terrain:

Drive slowly and steadily, avoid braking unnecessarily to help maintain traction.

If your chair has a tilt function, use it to shift weight towards the rear axle, improving grip and helping you avoid getting stuck.

On surfaces like sand or gravel, tilting the chair slightly back can reduce pressure on the front wheels and prevent the wheels digging into the ground and getting stuck.

In general, adjust the drive parameters to whatever works for you, but these pointers may be a good place to start.
